Resolven Miners Welfare is ready to take its first steps back — but we need your help. We’re looking for volunteers to help us reopen the downstairs bar and begin the journey to restoring our treasured community building. This is a temporary call for support until we can grow our reserves and begin employing staff again. It’s a chance to be part of something special, something that could shape the future of Resolven for generations.
A New Chapter Begins – But We Can’t Do It Alone
As Trustees of Resolven Welfare, we’ve always carried the responsibility of caring for this building with pride — and with deep respect for what it means to the people of this valley.
Much of the work we do happens behind the scenes. It’s unseen and often thankless, but always done with love. Because this isn’t just a building — it’s a symbol of community, heritage, and belonging.
We now know, after months of assessment, that the only way to secure this building’s long-term future is through a full refurbishment. It’s a bold goal, requiring around £5 million. A huge figure, yes — but not beyond reach, with the right support and a shared vision.
The good news? We’ve overcome some major hurdles. We’ve resolved our insurance issues, and that means we can finally begin moving forward. But we’re also losing precious parts of the building’s original structure — so time is not on our side.
Let’s Talk About the Elephant in the Room
We know there are mixed feelings in the community. Some have suggested that maybe we should just demolish the upper floors — including the theatre — and keep the ground floor bar.
We hear you. We’ve explored it.
But after careful consideration, we have to be clear: it’s simply not a viable option. Demolition at that level is extremely expensive, and it’s not something major funders are willing to support. Grants of that scale are awarded to projects that aim to preserve and enhance community buildings — not dismantle them.
So this really is all or nothing. We either save the building in its entirety, or we risk losing it completely.
The Bar Is Just the Beginning – And You Can Help Make It Happen
Here’s the exciting part: we’re in a position where we may be able to reopen the downstairs bar. This would be the first real step in breathing life back into the Welfare, bringing people together again, and showing what’s possible when a community pulls together.
But we need you.
We’re calling for volunteers to help us get there. This isn’t forever — it’s a temporary call for support until we’re on our feet again. Our goal is to build enough financial stability to create paid roles in the future, giving something back to those who help us now.
We’re looking for people who can help with:
- Cleaning – to get the space sparkling again
- Bar Staff – to serve and welcome our guests
- Entertainment & Events – from singers and bands to bingo and quizzes
- Skilled Trades – electricians, carpenters, handypeople who can help us patch, fix, and prepare
Whether you’ve got one hour to spare or want to be part of something ongoing — we’d love to hear from you.
Be Part of Something Bigger Than Any One Person
This isn’t just about reopening a bar or saving an old building. This is about rebuilding the heart of Resolven. It’s about laughter echoing through the walls again. It’s about bringing generations back under one roof. It’s about pride — in our past, our people, and our future.
If you’ve ever asked how you can help — this is it. If you’ve ever missed the Welfare, this is your chance to bring it back. If you’ve ever wanted to be part of something truly meaningful — your moment is now.
We can’t wait to welcome you on this journey.
